We recently moved house and kept a lot of our belongings in your self-storage facility at Bury When we moved from our house, we made the most of your offer, which worked well. The storage facility was secure, easy to access, clean and dry; I never had any concerns for our belongings during the months they were left there. The manager at the warehouse (Arif) was always available and went out of his way to help out and give advice. When we were arranging the storage and vehicles, all your staff, especially Arif, were always friendly and very helpful either on the phone or if we called into the office. Moving house can be stressful, but everything involving moving and storing our belongings went smoothly, without worry and at a price that was far below anything else we could find. I just wanted to send this e-mail to you to acknowledge the amazing experience I have had in dealing with your facility. I have been renting space for the storage of my furniture. Through the entire process the only thing that has been pleasant has been my dealings with your facility and in particular, your staff. Every phone conversation has been pleasant, every e-mail has been replied to and all questions and concerns have always been addressed and answered to complete satisfaction. I would like to take the opportunity to make special mention of Sabir and don. I was down there recently to get my belongings ready for someone coming in to look at the furniture for purchase. I had a lot to do in a short period of time and often found things not going my way. Not knowing the area Sabir and Don Wear always ready to assist in any way possible. When I thought I was going to run short of time on site, they arranged 24 hour access for me just in case. When I needed something that I didn't bring with me sabir and Don offered what they had on site. (extension cords, a larger unit to show the furniture etc.) Finding people like Sabir and Don in a service type of industry is a rare find.

Things to do before storing:

Make a list of all the packing supplies you will need. Such as boxes, tape, bubble wrap, marking pens, damp rid, rope, and pallets.
Visit the facility that you want to store your items. Take a list of what you are going to be storing so that the manager can help you determine the correct size for your needs.
Schedule your mover 30-45 days in advance.
Be sure to read the lease before signing it. Make sure you are aware of company policies on moving out, paying the rent and other important information.
If you are using a moving company, find out what size truck they will be using. This is valuable in determining if your unit will be accessible to that truck. Most moving companies charge more the farther they have to carry your things.

Do:

Utilize all the space in your unit. Make a plan as to how you are going to arrange your items. A good plan will save you the time of having to rearrange your unit. Leave an aisle in the center of your unit so that you have a walk way to the back of the unit.
Use freestanding shelves to help organize your unit.
Label the boxes on all six sides and keep a list for easy reference. This will save you time if you have to look for something in particular. When packing boxes fill them without making them too heavy to lift. Always put the heavier boxes on the bottom and the lighter ones on top of the heavier ones. This will prevent boxes from being crushed. Keep boxes off the floor.
Be sure to store frequently used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for them.
To protect your items cover them with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets.
Be sure to check your unit once a month.
Disassemble items such as tables, bed frames, etc. (This will save space.) Wrap and label all pieces for an easier time when you have to reassemble them. Put all hard ware in bags and mark the bags accordingly.
When you disassemble electronics, such as computers, stereos, things that have numerous cords, place small colored stickers on the cord and the same color sticker where the cord goes. This will save you the hassle of trying to figure out what goes where when it comes time to reassemble your electronics. If possible, use the original boxes to store your electronics and other items.
Make sure that all appliances are clean and dry before storing them. Leave appliances slightly ajar to prevent mildew.
If it is possible store couches on end. Stack chairs seat to seat. Use the inside of appliances and drawers to store smaller items. When stacking furniture use paper pads in between the items to avoid scratching.
Store mirrors and paintings on end, not flat.
To prevent rusting rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools, bicycles, and equipment. Drain and clean all debris from all equipment before you store them.
When wrapping collectibles or anything breakable, tape it after you wrap it. This should avoid mistaking them for excess paper to fill the box. Use bubble wrap or unprinted paper to wrap breakables. Group similar items together and mark the boxes accordingly.
Clothing and draperies should be stored in wardrobe boxes, on hangers, to retain their original shapes.
Purchase the insurance. If your belongings are worth storing, they are worth insuring.
Rubbermaid containers are great to store your items. They have tight fitting lids and stack easily. Keep the more valuable items in the rear of the unit. This will prevent others from seeing them when you are in your unit.
Keep out of season clothes accessible, you may have your belongings in storage longer than anticipated.
Be aware of your surroundings when you are in your unit. If you see a potential problem or anything suspicious alert the manager.

Don't:

Do not use plastic to cover your belongings. It retains moisture.
Do not store any food items. This will prevent any unwanted guests.
Do not pack your boxes so that they are too heavy to carry them. Especially when you are packing books.
Do not assume that your homeowners or renters insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. Purchase the insurance.
Do not give out your password, gate code or any information to any one that is not listed as having "Access".
Do not use printed newspaper. The ink may smudge and get on your items.
Do not forget to clean appliances before you store them.
Do not store any toxins or flammables. Such as paint, oil, or gasoline.

More and more people today are finding it hard to manage the space they rent, own or lease and are turning to self-storage as a solution to cluttered personal and business lives. Whether you're looking to store just a few items, archive your business paperwork or put most of your possessions in a safe place for a few weeks, months or years this could be a cost-effective and flexible solution for you.

So, just what is self-storage? Self storage offers both personal and business users a storage solution that they can basically control themselves. As with more traditional storage methods, self-storage allows you to rent storage space where you can keep goods and belongings in specialist facilities. In the past, we have had to rely upon removal companies and large storage organizations to store on our behalf and have had to play by their rules with limited access, no flexibility, long-term contracts and high charges. With the advent of self-storage, we've been given a lot more choice. It's 'Do It Yourself' storage.

Recognizing that many consumers and businesses need more control over what, where, when and how they store the self-storage industry has evolved into a cost-effective, flexible and secure storage alternative. The self-storage space you rent will be self-contained and fully enclosed and can vary in size according to your specific needs - you could be looking at as small a space as a closet through to a unit big enough to store your boat, the entire contents of your house or extensive business archives.

This is an incredibly flexible storage alternative. You can choose to store more or less anything you like in the space size that you choose for as long or as short a time as necessary. Unlike traditional storage methods, self-storage allows you to access your storage space free of charge at any time (subject to facility opening times) which not only means that you can easily access what you have stored but that you can take parts of it out of storage and replace it with other items with no hassle, no waiting and no additional cost. In many cases you can simply drive up to your self-storage unit and park outside. You can even quickly increase or decrease the size of storage space you use according to changing needs. And, unlike traditional storage methods, you'll know that your self-storage unit will stay where it is and your stuff won't be moved around by the storage provider without your permission.

If you're looking to use self-storage the first difference you'll notice is that it's your responsibility to get your stuff to the self-storage facility, pack your goods into the space provided and, ultimately, move it out (although some companies offer fee-based removal and packing services). This allows you to pack your storage space in the way that best suits you so that you can easily access items without having to unload everything in the unit. Most facilities will sell you packing supplies and may even hire removal vehicles to make the whole process quick and simple.

Self storage agreements can usually be terminated at very short notice. Although you may be asked to pay a deposit and weekly or monthly rental charges up front, you'll generally find when you close your agreement that you'll be refunded in full for time you haven't used. In addition, self-storage companies are not in the habit of charging you to access your storage space - unlike traditional storers who may levy a charge and require advance notice whenever you need access.

Self storage is also a secure solution to storage needs. In most cases, the storage unit you hire can only be accessed by yourself - you'll be the only authorized key holder, although you can generally nominate further key holders if you wish. In most cases, you'll be expected to provide your own lock for your space - giving you an extra guarantee of security. In addition, reputable self-storage operations will have a range of their own security measures in place - these can include CCTV, guards and alarm systems.

As the self-storage industry has evolved so has the range of services on offer. Larger self-storage facilities have started to offer business services such as office space, administrative services, meeting areas and toilet/shower rooms.
